You are able to put your child’s name on our waiting list for a Two Year Old Early Education Place or Nursery School place as soon as you have registered their birth.

Children whose names are on our waiting list will be offered a place, if eligible, in our ‘ Two Year Old Early Education’ class rooms the term after their second birthday or if appropriate they will be offered a place in our Nursery School class rooms for children aged 3-5 years.

Places are offered to children as their name reaches the top of the waiting list.  If the school is oversubscribed the date at which your child’s name was placed on the list will be taken into consideration.

The school will telephone you to offer you a place and talk to you about your requirements.

Places are offered for the start of each term i.e. September, January or April depending on availability.

Availability is dependent on the number of children moving on to their Nursery Class or Primary School in July and how many children take the places offered.

We are able to offer you a free, part time place of 15 hours per week in either our Two Year Old Early Education rooms or one of our Nursery School class rooms dependent on your child’s age and eligibility.  This place can be either five morning sessions per week 8.45am to 11.45am; or five afternoon sessions per week 12.15pm to 3.15pm.

Before your child starts at the school we will arrange for you to come for a visit.  At this visit we will need to see your child’s birth certificate, medical card or passport. This is to enable us to check the spelling of your child’s name and their date of birth to make sure that we get them right on the admission forms.  These forms have to be filled in before you can leave your child with us.

You will be invited to visit to the school to have a look around you will be able to meet the staff who will be working with your child and ask any questions you may have.  It is also an opportunity to find out about the other services that the school offers.

Having your child’s name on our waiting list is not a guarantee of a place. You are able to put your child’s name on as many waiting lists as you wish.

Special educational needs

We strive to meet the needs of each individual child at Abbey Green and can offer support and guidance for families with children who have additional needs.  For further information please contact the school and ask to speak to our SENCO, Helen Jones.

Attendance

It is very important that your child attends regularly. Children make better progress if they come to Nursery every day.

If you have any problems about bringing your child every day, please talk to the Headteacher or one of our Families and Communities team about it. We may be able to help.

Attendance registers are marked between 8.45 am and 9.15 am and between 12.15pm and 12.45 pm.  Please ensure that your child arrives at nursery in time for registration.

It is important that we know if your child is absent due to illness.  Please phone us on 01274 722070 and let us know.  If we do not hear from you on the first day that your child is poorly we will phone you.  We worry when children do not arrive at nursery.

Please let us know if your child has a dentist, doctor or hospital appointment.

Family Holidays and Leave of Absence

It is possible for families to take up to two weeks (10 days) off from school for family holidays at the discretion of the head teacher.  A ‘Leave of Absence’ form must be completed and a date of return agreed. For extended visits abroad, we follow Education Bradford’s policy for Holidays in Term Time.

If you need to take a family holiday or travel for an extended visit abroad during the school term please ask at the office for a ‘Leave of Absence’ form.  Extended leave may be granted, again at the discretion of the head teacher, and a date of return agreed.  It must be noted that if your child does not return to school on the agreed date and the school is not notified your child’s name may be removed from the register and their place allocated to someone else.

Collecting Children from the Nursery School

When your child starts in one of our class rooms we ask that you provide us with details of people who may come to pick them up at the end of the session.

Please make sure that you tell the staff if someone else is coming to collect your child so that arrangements can be made.  We will not allow children to leave with anyone that is not known to us.

We will not allow children to be collected by younger brothers and sisters or other family members under the age of 16

Our Two Year Old Early Education and Nursery School Classrooms

We believe that parents are the first and most important educators of their children. As a parent you have an in-depth knowledge of your child, you know much more about them than we ever will.   We recognise the importance of parents being fully involved in their child’s experiences development and learning and therefore we want to share every aspect of your child’s day with you. Your child’s Learning Journey is available electronically through Early Essence, please feel free to use this to share your child’s home experiences with us.

Young children learn through play. At Abbey Green the teaching and learning in all of our class rooms follows the Department for Education Early Years Foundation Stage Framework (see link below). This is divided into 7 curriculum areas – Personal, Social & Emotional Development (PSED), Physical Development (PD), Communication & Language (C&L), Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World (UtW), Expressive Arts & Design (EA&D). Within these areas are descriptions of what a child might be learning at different stages in their early years. We use these descriptions to ensure we plan for and provide appropriate opportunities for learning and developing. Particular attention is given to developing children’s emotional well being and their social skills, sharing, taking turns, listening, sharing their ideas and building on their confidence.  Children who are confident and happy are better equipped for learning.

At Abbey Green one of our strengths is that we have an exciting garden space, the children have constant access to this well planned learning area and benefit from the different learning opportunities delivered there.

Another strength is our highly experienced and knowledgeable staff who consider each child’s individual interests and stage of development and will plan play based activities around these ensuring that children have experience in all areas of learning and development.    These activities support children’s inbuilt curiosity and their desire to make sense of their world.  They enable them to make choices and discoveries and find things out for themselves developing their independence and an understanding that learning is fun and exciting.

Each child’s activities and their discoveries and learning are recorded and then continuously reviewed and developed to meet their changing needs.

Settling into Nursery School

The way in which we settle children into the nursery school at Abbey Green has been developed over many years by very experienced staff.  It is our priority to make sure that before children are left with us they feel safe, happy, secure and confident in their new environment.

Before starting with us your child will be assigned a Key Person who is responsible for their pastoral care.  Their Key Person will also support the class teacher to observe and track your child’s progress.  The class teacher will record their development in their Learning Journey.  This is done on our electronic system ‘Early Essence’ and you will be given a pass word to enable to look at this and add your own comments and photos if you would like to.  The information gained from observing your child and recording their learning and development helps their teacher to provide opportunities for them to progress.

When your child first starts you will be asked to stay with them until their Key Worker and other staff members think that they are ready for you to leave them.  It will help your child to settle if you play with them, and talk to them about starting Nursery School, what will happen and what they will be able to do here.  This is a big step in their lives and they will need your reassurance.

When you leave your child for the first time it will only be for a very few minutes.

When you do leave your child, it is very important that you come back at the time you are asked. If you are late your child may get worried and upset.

Try not to rush them into staying without you too quickly

We settle children in this way rather than hurry things and cause them to get anxious and frightened.  It may take a few days or even a few weeks – all children are different.  Please don’t worry or get upset or cross, they will settle in their own time
